The Basics of Complementary Treatments at a Hospital in Germany and Mexico
The human body is very complex. When affected with a serious illness, incorporating a whole-body approach is necessary in the healing process. Treatment must focus on eradicating the disease, strengthening the immune system, detoxification, nutrition, and overall health. The foods and drinks that you put into your body, the supplements you take, how much you exercise, and getting a sufficient amount of sleep are essential tools to successfully achieve optimal health.
The antibiotics Rocephin and Flagyl are often given through your stay at these hospitals during the Lyme treatment package. These antibiotics target the three forms of Lyme—extracellular, intracellular, and cyst form. Rocephin can be quite effective against extracellular forms of Lyme and in conjunction with WBHT, it becomes successful inside the cell as well. Flagyl is an anti-cystic form of antibiotic and is given to make sure the bugs in the cyst form are destroyed.
Detoxification is a method where toxins are eliminated from the body. It is a key component to healing. During the treatment of Lyme disease or other illnesses one may experience an increase of negative symptoms due to the buildup of toxins from both the environment and the pathogenic microbes under attack. This is referred to as a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction and it is how the body responds to toxins. The reaction may include brain fog, night sweats, depression, vertigo, flu like symptoms, achiness, and various other symptoms. If the toxic levels increase too much, it becomes dangerous and can affect the brain and other organs, which is why detoxification is so important. The kidney and liver naturally detoxify the body. However, when the load becomes too much for these organs, other forms of detoxification are necessary to help the body remove microbial and chemical toxins.
Chelation is the standard treatment for removing heavy metals from the body. Many chronic illnesses impede the process by which the body filters mercury and various heavy metals, resulting in heavy metal toxicity. Heavy metals are not excreted from the body effectively and tend to gather in the soft tissues. Dental fillings, cosmetics, antiperspirants, drinking water, air, food, and lead paint in our environment all attribute to heavy metal toxicity.
Chelation therapy involves intravenous injections or suppositories of a chelating agent. A chelating agent is a compound that reversibly binds to another metal. In terms of heavy metal detoxification, a chelator pulls metals that have previously attached themselves to bodily tissues, mobilizing them so that the body can eliminate them naturally. Chelation is considered a detoxification therapy, however it is more specific in its targeting of metal toxins.
Chemotherapy is used in conjunction with hyperthermia treatment. The heat can increase the effect of chemotherapy treatments by allowing cancer cells to be more sensitive to chemotherapy and by harming other cancer cells. If chemotherapy is performed in combination with hyperthermia these treatments are much more effective. Also, in many cases it is possible to use a lower dosage of chemotherapy which means less toxicity for the patient.
Colon Therapy has been used for centuries to eliminate waste and toxins that build up in the colon and intestinal tract. Colonics improve circulatory functions, stimulate the immune system, cleanse the blood, reduce headaches, boost energy, and assist in restoring proper pH balance in the body. Colonics are especially helpful to people with chronic illnesses such as Lyme disease or cancer, as many times these patients have difficulty with digestion and absorbing proteins. People with chronic illnesses may also be deficient in various vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids that are partially absorbed through the colon. Colonics remove the buildup of waste and toxins and enable the colon to absorb more nutrients. Additionally, colonics help eliminate toxins remaining from treatment where the killing of Lyme or other pathogens results in a die off reaction of organisms that creates toxins.
Throughout the years more and more people are discovering the healing powers of herbs. Herbs have antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic, and antifungal properties to help fight infections. Furthermore, microbes appear not to develop resistance as easily to plant based antimicrobials as well as they do to pharmaceutical antibiotics. Depending upon the herb, it can decrease inflammation, enhance the immune system, and promote blood circulation and oxygenation in the body. This in turn supports in improving energy level, mental clarity, and physical discomfort.
Hyperthermia increases the body temperature to induce a fever. For centuries, fever therapy has been known to have a significant healing effect. Hyperthermia stimulates the immune system, damages cancer tissue, and can eradicate many strains of Borreliosis and other pathogens. When antibiotics or chemotherapy are used in conjunction with hyperthermia, they are much more effective.
Infrared radiation makes it possible to heat up deeper levels of tissue that would otherwise be out of reach for a non-infrared sauna or steam room. As a result, you are able to release more toxins in your sweat from an infrared sauna. Repeated sauna use can also decrease elevated blood pressure and improve the elasticity of the arteries. Infrared saunas have proven to be very beneficial for cardiovascular rehabilitation, arthritis, allergies, skin conditions, and chemical sensitivities.
Intravenous Nutrient Therapies
Intravenous vitamin, lipid, and amino acid therapies are safe and effective methods of delivering large doses of nutrients through the bloodstream by infusing vitamins into the body. IV vitamin therapy provides optimal absorption of the vitamins, which in turn increases your energy, helps the body to detoxify, improves blood flow, and boosts the immune system so you are better equipped to fight diseases.
An ion cleanse is used to help neutralize and eliminate chemicals, toxins, and other impurities in the body. This method uses an ionic footbath that contains negatively charged ions, which attract the positive ions of the free radicals that are in your body. The ion cleanse extracts positive ions and free radicals from your body and leaves your system more cleansed.
Nutrition and Diet
Our bodies rely on our diet for energy, growth, repair, immune health, brain and nervous system function, strong bones, and the production of hormones. Nutrition plays a significant role in healing and the prevention of further illnesses. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies from one’s diet can be a main contributing factor to chronic conditions. Avoiding inflammatory foods is also important, as patients suffering from Lyme and cancer can have an increased sensitivity to certain foods. Foods containing dairy, gluten, or foods that are processed, high in trans–fats, carbohydrates and sugars are considered problematic and difficult to tolerate. Eating whole foods is the best start to give your body a “fighting chance”. Most importantly listen to your body. Keep track of certain foods that cause symptoms to flare, and plan your diet accordingly to these sensitivities, while finding a balance.
Oral Nutritional Supplements
Chronic illnesses can rid the body of the proper amount of nutrients or prevent nutrient absorption. Supplements can help to balance vitamin and mineral levels and produce and regulate hormone production, making them an essential part of the healing process. The extra nutrients from supplements prevent free radicals from invading healthy cells and aid in repairing and regenerating damaged cells. This promotes healing and improves overall health.
Ozone is an extremely active form of oxygen. It works to eradicate many pathogens, making it an effective adjunct therapy for the treatment of Lyme disease and co-infections. It is most often given intravenously through a process called Autohemotherapy, which involves taking approximately 250ml of blood from the body, infusing it with ozone gas, and putting it back into the bloodstream.
Plasmapheresis is a process where the liquid part of the blood, or plasma, is separated from the blood cells. Usually, the plasma is replaced with another solution such as saline or albumin, or the plasma is treated and then returned to your body. Some people refer to this procedure as apheresis but these are two slightly different procedures. Apheresis is the procedure where a patient’s blood is filtered and a particular component of that blood is removed and the rest is returned to circulation. But plasmapheresis is the procedure where the plasma is filtered out and then replaced with a fresh plasma infusion.
If you have Lyme disease, the plasma in your blood can sometimes be full of inflammatory compounds from the Borrelia and other co-infections. These inflammatory compounds, possibly combined with other environmental toxins, can make it difficult for your immune system to keep the Lyme infection under control. So the process of plasmapheresis can help to ‘cleanse’ your blood and give your body’s immune system a boost.
